Last weekend, we stopped at one of our favorite Indian restaurants in Milwaukee, Tandoor. We love to go at lunch time and try a variety of dishes on their buffet. It’s a great way to familiarize yourself with Indian cuisine as you don’t have to commit to a single dish and risk not liking it. (Though, I haven’t had anything I didn’t like yet!!!)

Earlier in the week, we had tandoori-style chicken at home. This is the result of my vindaloo paste search and was definitely a tasty meal. I substituted boneless, skinless chicken thighs. They still held up to the high-heat cooking and were very easy to eat and reheat. As with my chicken curry saute, we enjoyed the tandoori chicken over basmati rice.

Check out Tandoor Restaurant sometime soon!

On Saturday night, amidst the potential for an armageddon of snow, we drove in the pouring rain to downtown Milwaukee. Tucked next to one of Milwaukee’s iconic German restaurants is a hip and trendy Italian restaurant called Tutto. I found this restaurant on Yelp. It promised to be a restaurant that I might like or really hate. The reviews all were good when it came to the food. However, the discussions surrounding the ambience were leaving mixed messages. Some really liked the place. Others thought they had landed in the wrong restaurant. I’ll admit, it’s loud, sportsbar-like feel doesn’t fit the quality of the food.

We ordered fried eggplant for an appetizer. I’m a huge fan of this at Balistreri’s on 68th street in Wauwatosa. I must say that Tutto did an equally good job with their eggplant. The strips were fried to perfection without soaking up the frying oil. They were dusted with parmesan and accompanied with a vibrant marinara. Excellent starter!

I had the baked penne in Bolognese. It was also quite good. The dish was ample and used what appeared to be the same marinara base as the eggplant. They added meat to the Bolognese sauce. I’m not an expert on Bolognese, having made it from scratch only a few times. I will say that I think this is more along the lines of Bolognese-like than what I’ve read and made myself.

Regardless, we WILL be going back. I can’t wait to try their other dishes. I highly recommend this bustling hot spot in Milwaukee.

For Dale’s birthday dinner, he chose Crazy Water. This restaurant in the fifth ward area of Milwaukee was a great choice. According to the restaurant’s site, this was an old feed building. We sat outside, in the back of the restaurant. However, our walk through the intimate dining/bar area gave us a great feel of the place. It’s clearly a good place for couples to go. Also…a great place for a group of friends. Out in the back, their patio is fully covered with framing, screening and air conditioning (ceiling fans).

We started out with the goat cheese tart appetizer. (This appetizer also makes an appearance on the dessert menu) This was an absolutely delicious choice. The goat cheese enveloped a spread of mint pesto and sweet, decadent fig preserves. The dish was served with two kinds of crackers and grapes on the side. I may have to try to duplicate this at home. Dale had the glazed salmon and I had the trout amandine. Both dishes were delicious. However, I have to talk about one of the sides on my plate, the tomato tarte tatin. I could have eaten this as a standalone dish with just a small, bright salad of bitter greens (coincidentally, bitter green salad was the other side on the plate.) This tomato dish was surprisingly sweet with the delicious, bright, slightly tart flavor of a sun-dried. The catch is that these tomatoes seemed to be fresh! I may have to go back in a few weeks just to have another bite. Having been disappointed with the tomato crop in my garden this year, I feel a bit deprived of good, summer tomatoes this year. Last, we had to have dessert. This is something that we don’t often do…and typically never order if we’ve had an appetizer. Dale ordered the chocolate ganache tart. This tart is an abundance of rich, dark chocolate flavor and definitely was the right size. Any larger and Dale would have gone into a chocolate coma. I had the Door County cherry bread pudding. This was a small, individually baked round of bread pudding. It definitely capitalized on brown sides…giving each bite that great “corner piece” taste.

You can find out more on this great place with the link to their website below. They don’t take email or Open Table reservations at this time.
