Tonight marked the end of my summer bounty. The ancho and jalapeno peppers that came so late in my garden this year are now a part of the first of the season’s chili. I browned some beef and onions (also from my garden…but chopped and stored in the freezer). I added homemade tomato sauce, garlic, various spices and celery. After a few hours, the chili was ready for some kidney beans. However, it wasn’t quite ready for dinner. I wanted a slightly hotter and smokier taste. To heat things up, I added some pickled jalapeno juice and more spices. To increase the smoky flavor, I added some smoked paprika. To round out the flavors, I added a few teaspoons of sugar, some salt, and a few grinds of pepper. Right before serving, I thickened the chili with a few tablespoons of masa flour and water. Autumn is truly my favorite season. The blend of summer bounty and cool fall days create the perfect mood for warming, filling meals. I can’t wait for the leftovers!

I stopped into the downtown Metro Market on Friday night. Having just gotten back from a trip the prior weekend, we didn’t have a lot of time to shop during the week. I stopped at the grocery store a few times to pick up something for dinner. Friday was going to be fish night. I stopped at the fish counter and had a few sole fillets packaged up. On my way toward the checkout, I caught a new meal option that the store was offering. They’re called $6 meals (they’ve also got some $4 ones too). These meals are made of various seafood options pre-packaged and ready to cook when you get home. The cooking instructions are shown on the price sticker. Looking at the packaging, it seems as though this is Roundy’s first try at putting together more complete meal options. I’m sure that the packaging and variety will improve over time. For the time being, the food was great! I bought two salmon fillets that were stuffed with crab. They cooked up perfectly in their container and were served with boiled potatoes and pureed squash.
Looking into the $6 meal program, it’s offered at a few different stores. It sounds like they’ll be offered at more stores in the future once the program is proven at their test locations. If you get to the Metro Market locations, look for the great meals in gold foil containers!
